Vasyl Lomachenko vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux
|Vasyl Lomachenko||Winner by Stoppage|
In a very surprising turn of event between the fight of Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux, the 29-year-old Ukrainian Lomachenko defeated his opponent last Saturday to retain his World Boxing Organization (WBO) championship title.
The stoppage came from the 6th round of the bout when the 37-year-old boxer from Cuba complained about his hurting left hand. This is the reason why the trainer of Rigondeaux made a decision to stop the fight and allowing the boxer from Ukraine win the title.
According to the report of AP, the Cuban fighter might injure his hand during the 2nd round of the fight.
With his victory, Lomachenko now improved his record to 10-1 (8 wins via Kos) and won 7th consecutive fights already. He remains as the top boxer in the 130-pounder WBO championship.
The Ukrainian boxer had won at least 4 stoppage fights in his career.
As for the former world champion fighter from Cuba, this will be the first time he lost in his career and only because he quit the fight. Rigondeaux now has a current record of 17-1 (11 via KOs), whom they consider a great defensive boxer yet failed to match the intensity of Lomachenko.
“He frustrates them, he begins to come on, looks like he’s going to knock them out, they quit because they can’t answer back,” said Bob Arum during an interview as quoted by the reported news.
“He’ll take anybody. He’ll go to 135 pounds, and he’ll make a joke of [Jorge] Linares. He’ll make a joke of [Mikey] Garcia,” he added. “They’re really good fighters, but this guy is super special. You’ve never seen anything like this. Maybe he’ll go to 140, I don’t know. He’s going to do this to everybody.”
Arum is the current promoter of the 29-year-old Ukrainian boxer.
