Barangay Ginebra Kings vs. Meralco Bolts
|Barangay Ginebra Kings||102|
In the opening game of the PBA Governor’s Cup Championship Series, the Barangay Ginebra Kings caught the Meralco Bolts off night and took advantage of the situation by beating them with the final score of 102-87 on Friday evening.
The Gin Kings now are leading 1-0 in the scheduled best-of-7 series.
The Barangay Ginebra Kings showed impressive performance both on defense and offense ends to defeat the Maralco Bolts at the Quezon Convention Center in Quezon Province. The Gin Kings controlled the game since the opening period and the Bolts have the chance to equalize the score in the 3rd quarter, but they failed to capitalize.
As expected, import Justin Brownlee led the Kings in scoring and in the rebounding with 32 points and 19 boards respectively. He also has 4 assists for the game and proved that they are serious in winning the title with him again.
The return of Greg Slaughter for Ginebra is also a huge factor in giving the Bolts more headaches in the shaded area because it is not easy for them to match the 7-foot tall center.
For Gin Kings headcoach Tim Cone, he admitted that he never expected that his team would play that well on Friday. He added that he is surprised that five of his players scored in double figures and managed to control the game since the 1st quarter until the final period.
Unlike in their previous Finals meeting last year, the Bolts won game one.
The schedule of game two will be on Sunday and the venue is at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City. The Meralco Bolts are expected to bounce back and so the Kings must be ready for it.
Bolts’ import Allen Durham is somehow a missing link in the scoring end.
