Despite the young lineup of the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas basketball team who represented the Philippines at the ongoing 2017 FIBA Asia Championships Cup, they were able to defeat their rival BC Astana of Kazakhstan in the opening matches on Friday.
The team is playing without any player from the PBA and competing in Chenzou, China.
The Philippines sent the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas basketball team in China to compete for the 2017 FIBA Asia Championships Cup. Despite not including a single professional basketball player from the PBA, the young Filipino team managed to show their composure and defeated their rival BC Astana with the final score of 73-65 on Friday at the Chenzou Sports Center.
Point guard Keifer Ravena led the team in scoring with a total of 22 big points and exploded in the 3rd period with 9 points. It was actually not an easy win for the Filipino squad because the Kazakhstan team led as much as 11 points with the score of 40-29. However, the 23-year-old Ravena played a decent game and helped the team overcome their rivals.
The young Chooks-to-Go team now got their first win and played with newly recruited Isaiah Austin who showed an impressive debut with his new team. The 7-foot-tall American Austin scored 17 points, with 18 boards and 6 block shots for the winning game.
The other player who scored in double figures includes Jeff Manuel with 10, while Jeric Teng added 7 points and Jose with 6 points.
As for the BC Astana, Dmitriy Gavrilov led the team with 11 points and 11 board; while Anthony Clemmons and Justin Carter added 10 points apiece. They had all the chances to still the victory against the Chooks-to-Go, but the young Filipino team did not give up and sealed the victory after the final buzzer.
They will prepare on Saturday against the Palestinian basketball team, Sarreyet Ramallah.
