Slovenia vs. Serbia
In a very surprising turn of event, the national basketball team of Slovenia defeated the national team of Serbia to capture their first ever FIBA European Championship last Sunday. The Slovenians beat the Serbians with the final score of 93-85 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Goran Dragic led the Slovenians with 35 big points and won the MVP award.
The recently concluded 2017 FIBA European Championships has a surprised champion with the Slovenian national basketball team. Perhaps nobody is expecting Slovenia will bring home to title this year, but they were able to prove themselves even against the tough Serbian squad.
NBA veteran Goran Dragic led the team in scoring and took control of the game when necessary. The 31-year-old Slovenian team captain is also the recipient of the prestigious Most Valuable Player (MVP) award last Sunday.
Unfortunately, he might not be playing again for the national team of Slovenia.
“I have achieved what I wanted and I think it is right to end it at this point,” said 31-year-old Miami Heat point guard during a news conference on Tuesday as quoted by Reuters.
The news added that he will be returning to the United States to begin practicing with the Miami Heat on Thursday.
According to a local broadcaster Pro Plus, the game between Slovenia and Serbia during the finals is the most watched TV sporting event in the history of Slovenia, as detailed by the news online.
With the victory, the Slovenian national team accepted a Golden Order for Merits from the President of Slovenia himself Borut Pahor.
This is a highest state honor that is achieved by the basketball team of the country.
