Stan Wawrinka successfully defeated Russian Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 7-6 at the ongoing Geneva Open Tennis Tournament in Geneva, Switzerland on Friday. With this victory, he has the opportunity to retain the Banque Eric Sturdza Geneva Open against Mischa Zverev of Germany.
Wawrinka is the current defending champion and top seed for the tournament.
Because of defeating Kuznetsov on Friday, the Swiss tennis player improved his record to 19-8. He is aiming to achieve his 16th championship and his last title is against Djokovic back in September 2016 at the U.S. Open tournament.
The Swiss netter is happy of his latest accomplishment.
“The crowd has been great this week,” Wawrinka stated as quoted by atpworldtour.com. “They are very loud and support me a lot when I need most. I’m happy to be in the final and I’m looking forward to it. Mischa Zverev is a very talented player. He prepared very well for the season and has been playing some great tennis this year. He’s had some great victories especially against [Andy] Murray in Melbourne. He’s a lefty and has a special style that we don’t see too often nowadays,” he added.
German Mischa Zverev defeated Japanese Kei Nishikori, which earned him a spot to face Wawrinka.
