The PBA crowd-favorite Barangay Ginebra defeated the Blackwater Elite 96-82 on Friday at the Alonte Sports Arena and took a comfortable 2nd spot in the ongoing Commissioner’s Cup.

With the win, the Gin Kings moved on the 2nd spot of the team standing with 7-2.

The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings needed to deal with the Elite until the final buzzer to assure them their 7th win in 9 games. They are now a win away to secure an outright semifinals berth and can move closer to the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals if they succeed.

However, the San Miguel Beermen are still in the contest with a 6-2 record.

The Elite has a chance to tie the game in the 3rd quarter when the score is 65-62. Unfortunately, the Gin Kings controlled the game in the 4th quarter and gave them a good lead 79-67 with the help of veteran Mark Caguiao.

Aside from Caguiao who scored 8 points, Gin Kings’ import Justin Brownlee led the team with 35 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a block shot for the game. While point guard L.A. Tenorio added 17 points, Japeth Aguilar with 15 points and Sol Mercado scored 9 points.

For the Blackwater, their import Greg Smith led the team in scoring with 37 points and Digregorio added 18 points. Unfortunately, they did not get enough scoring from the other locals.

The Gin Kings next game will be on May 28 against the Meralco Bolts.
