In a surprising turn of event at the Asia Zonals 3.3 Chess Championship held at the Tagaytay City Convention Center, Indonesian no.1 seed International Master (IM) Irine Kharisma Sukandar loss to Filipino Olympian Catherine Perena-Secoptio on Sunday. Both women chess masters went toe-to-toe in the 2nd round of the tournament before the deciding point.
IM Sukandar made a decision to resign after 61 moves for the possible 1.5 points of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. It was a tough came for Catherine, but she managed to control the competition to seal her victory. The tournament started on February 24, 2017 and will end on March 6, 2017 as scheduled by the FIDE – World Chess Federation.
Other popular women chess players in the world who are also competing include Vo Thi Khim Pung, WGM Hoang Thi Bato Tram and Le Thanh Tu who are all from Vietnam. Another rising chess Filipina Grand Master who is also part of the competition is Janelle Mae Frayna.
