The San Miguel Beermen showed no mercy against the Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings on Friday and took a 1-0 lead for their best of 7 PBA Philippine Cup Championship matchup. The Beermen won by a huge margin 109-82 inside the crowded Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Gin Kings did not have the same intensity and were limited to 74 points only.
For the Beermen, point guard Chris Ross led the team with 17 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds. While center Jun Mar Fajardo scored 17 points, grabbed 8 boards, had 3 blocks and 2 assists for the game. He also got the necessary rest while watching his teammates controlling the game until the final buzzer of the 4th quarter.
Since the start of the ball game, the Gin Kings are struggling to execute their game plans and so the Beermen took advantage of the situation. They ended the first half with an almost 27-point blowout heading to the 3rd quarter.
In line with this, Ginebra head coach Tim Cone admitted the gamble to allow Aljon Mariano as a starter did not work what he expected. Likewise, their key players did not play their usual games and with limited points only. LA Tenorio and Japeth Aguilar only scored 5 points apiece, while Sol Mercado scored only 2 points for the entire game.
Game 2 is set on Sunday at Lucena City for the out of town game.
